Smuggler’s Coffee

  • 1/2 cup hot strong coffee
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 ounce gold rum
  • 1 ounce dark rum
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 1 long strip of orange zest, plus finely grated zest, for garnish
  • Sweetened whipped cream and grated Mexican chocolate, for garnish


In a heatproof glass, stir the coffee and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Stir in both rums. Add the cinnamon and the strip of orange zest. Garnish with whipped cream, grated Mexican chocolate and grated orange zest.

Masala Milk Punch

  • 9 black tea bags
  • 2 oz. ground masala spice blend
  • 2 oz. freshly grated ginger
  • 3/4 oz. rye
  • 3/4 oz. cognac
  • 3/4 oz. rum
  • 2 oz. whole milk


Simmer the first three ingredients in 4 cups of water for 20 minutes. Strain into a liquid measuring cup, then add an equal amount of sugar to make a 1:1 syrup. Stir until dissolved.

For each drink, fill a 9-oz mug with boiling water. In a separate glass, combine 1/2 oz. masala tea syrup with the rye, cognac, rum, and milk. When the mug is hot, discard the water, pour the contents of the glass into the bug, and top with more boiling water. Garnish with freshly grated cinnamon and nutmeg.

Jan’s Conundrum

  • 2 1/4 oz. dark rum
  • 1/2 oz dry sherry
  • 1/2 oz. berry shrub
  • 3 dashes bitters
  • lemon twist


Stir ingredients with ice, garnish with twist.

Little Devil

  • 3/4 oz. gin
  • 3/4 oz. light rum
  • 1/4 oz. Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 1/4 oz. lemon juice
  • 3 or 4 ice cubes


Combine, stir, and strain.

Rum Balls

  • 12 oz. vanilla wafers (bashed up to a fine powder)
  • 3 tbsp. cocoa
  • 3/4 c. light corn syrup
  • 1 c. finely chopped pecans
  • 3/8 c. rum


Mash up, make balls, dry on waxed paper, roll in powdered sugar. Undiluted frozen tangerine juice concentrate can be used instead of rum (without cocoa).

Hot Buttered Rum

  • 1 tsp. brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. grated lemon rind
  • 3 pinches ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch ground cloves
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 shot dark rum
  • boiling water
  • 1 tsp. butter


Rinse mug with boiling water to heat. Place first five ingredients in the bottom of the mug, and add the rum. Fill the remainder of the mug with boiling water, and add the teaspoon of butter.
